Where to Buy Rare Breeds Meat
© Traditional Breeds Meat Marketing Company Ltd

The Traditional Breeds Meat Marketing Co Ltd works with a small team of around 50 independent High Street butchers and Farm Shops who meet their carefully crafted criteria. With the TBMM Co.’s help, each of these outlets markets meat from rare breeds which is certified [link] by us. There are very many outlets other than these, including stalls at Farmers Markets, that claim to sell meat from rare breeds and a number do. However, since the original initiative has been so successful, some outlets have jumped on the bandwagon, declining to work to our exacting standards, and we cannot guarantee that they sell what they claim to sell. Only Accredited Rare Breeds Butchers sell stock certified by us. Please don’t be put off meat from rare breeds that is second rate and of unproven provenance.

You wouldn’t condemn Rolex watches or Rolls Royce cars because you’d had a bad experience with a fake so please don’t judge rare breeds on anything other than the real thing.

Accredited Rare Breeds Butchers
The network of Accredited Butchers is published on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust website - click here for a direct link, which will open in a new window.

Certified Stock
When you go shopping for rare breeds meat at any of our Accredited Butchers, ask to see the certificate that guarantees what you’re buying is what it says it is. If it cannot be produced, there is no guarantee as to the meat’s authenticity. The certificates look like these (click each one for a closer look):

Beef Certificate  Pork Certificate
PAI Certificate  Defra Certificate

Beef certificate, pork certificate, PAI certificate and Defra certificate.

As you can see, they give a lot of information including how the animal concerned was farmed, its breed and its type (i.e. a heifer or a steer), its date of birth and where it was produced. On the left-hand side in a box is legally required information under the Beef Labelling Laws including a unique reference number for traceability, where the abattoir was located and its licence number and where the meat was cut.

Each certificate is individually signed, guaranteeing that information.

As a company, we are licensed by the Department of the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) to be able to give you all the additional information not shown in the box and independently audited every year.

This is your reassurance of our and our butchers’ dedication to total transparency and quality. No other national scheme – not Organics nor any other – gives you this level of information and reassurance.

We stand four square behind our product. o
